Just about everybody has ambitions of what they want to achieve, but not everyone makes it. Between ambition and action lies a block that trips a lot of people up. When we look at it, this block is usually some sort of feeling. It might be a feeling that you’re not good enough, not worthy enough, not skilled/lucky/talented/rich or connected enough to succeed.

If you’ve ever experienced this type of feeling, you know how debilitating it is. It stops you from believing in what is possible, taking action, and from having what you want. The result is that you accept less than you’re worth and settle for second best. The usual ways we are told to deal with these fears are simply not helpful.

Common Missteps in Overcoming Mental Blocks

Trust Yourself

Being told to "trust yourself" can sometimes mean trusting in the sense of fear. When you're engulfed in self-doubt, trusting those fears only perpetuates the cycle of inaction.

I Believe in You

Hearing "I believe in you" from others might highlight how little self-belief you actually have. This can unintentionally underscore your insecurities rather than alleviate them.

You’ve Got This

When someone says, "You’ve got this," it can make you feel worse if you believe you don’t. It may feel like a reminder of your perceived inadequacies.

A New Approach: Deactivate the Feeling

Why Deactivation Works

I reckon we should just deactivate the feeling. That way, you don’t have to deal with it. This is not faux courage, trying to explain away the feelings, or ignoring the voice in your head. When you deactivate the feeling, it is literally not there, and you can take the action you need to—there is nothing standing in your way.

How to Deactivate Limiting Feelings

And the best part is, deactivation is super easy. Once it’s deactivated, it’s gone. This approach allows you to move forward without the baggage of negative emotions holding you back.
